The federal government has worked hard towards its goal of awarding 23 percent of prime contracts to small businesses, and for the past two years we’ve met that goal. In fiscal year 2014, agencies awarded 24.99 percent, or $91.7 billion, of prime contract dollars to small businesses. And for the first time, the federal government met its subcontracting goal for women owned small businesses.

Information technology has become interconnected with the healthcare field. The two have grown exponentially in the last two decades and will stay at the top of the federal agenda, particularly as the government implements initiatives like the Federal Health IT Strategic Plan.

This interconnectedness has made it important to give government agencies access to many avenues of business. However, agencies need to recognize where the experts are.

The Department of Defense’s efforts to secure the nation continues to expand into new realms—from the cyber world to satellites orbiting Earth. As operations and programs expand, the contracting officers’ workloads don’t go away, particularly the everyday procurements and administrative duties.
